In the first chapter, Shurtleff outlines the fundamentals of an audition such as being heard and being seen. An awareness of the actor’s life, prejudices, emotions, memories and experiences will allow the actor to be the ideal instrument to express and represent any character. After reading this book, I believe that a truly talented actor will have to be, above all else, aware. ![]() He says actors have to know more than their characters and act as the subconscious which drives particular behaviors. The substories he included gave his critiques and advices credibility.Īccording to Shurtleff, acting is more life-like than life itself. He included throughout the book his personal experiences with different actors as well as how he got started in the business of theatre. Reading Audition was like reading an autobiography of Michael Shurtleff’s professional life.
